April 14 General Meeting

Nomination of Stewards and H&S Reps

The next General Meeting will take place on April 14 at 16:30.  Nominations will be held for the positions of five (5) stewards (3 for RRC and 2 for Siemens) and two (2) H&S representatives, one for each company.  In a nutshell, below are the descriptions of each position:

A union steward is the first point of contact for a member when an issue arises that concerns a lodge member or members within their group.  This may relate to the interpretation of the Collective Agreement that may involve other lodge members or non-lodge members.  Stewards may also be present in instances involving disputes between the company and a union member(s).  Stewards attempt to resolve issues at the ground level rather than having the issue escalated.  Other tasks include distribution of information, attending certain meetings and explaining the Collective Agreement.  Good communication skills are definitely an asset!

A Health and Safety Representative will be part of each company’s H&S Committee (Title will vary).  A H&S representative will always be on the watch for any unsafe working conditions and will seek to resolve these situations in a timely fashion.  Members will contact the H&S representative for any H&S concerns.  Attendance at H&S meetings is compulsory.  A background in H&S is beneficial but not essential.

For both these roles, attendance is required at the General Meetings  in order to share information with other members of the lodge.  Training will be provided in all cases.

For further information regarding either role, contact myself, Nathalie Meunier, Shahira Azmy or Matt McGinn.

Our Retiree Scrutineers

Congratulations to the new LL2468 (RRC) Negotiation Committee members!  Ivan Halar, Kim Greenwood and Sylvia Baard have been voted-in to become the three additional members of the LL2468 (RRC) Negotiation Committee, joining previously instated member Matt McGinn, VP of LL2468.

Please join me in wishing them success in their new roles!

Voter turn-out was approximately 65%.  That’s pretty much on par with voter turnout at federal elections and referendums for the past two decades, but we could do better!

Many thanks to Ed O’Flaherty and Greg Palmer, our retiree scrutineers!
